JONES, JOHN FOULKES (1826 - 1880), Calvinistic Methodist minister

Born at Machynlleth, 6 June 1826, son of John Jones of Fron Deg (Wrexham) and his wife Lydia, daughter of Thomas Foulkes and grand-daughter of Simon Lloyd of Bala. Foulkes Jones at the age of 13 was sent to the recently opened C.M. College at Bala, under Lewis Edwards and David Charles. Deciding (1843) to enter the ministry, he returned to Bala for a second period, and thence went (1844) to Edinburgh University. From 1848 to 1853 he was missioner in the eastern parts of Montgomeryshire, removed to Liverpool in 1853, was ordained in 1856, and removed to Chester in 1857. He travelled on the Continent, and in Egypt and Palestine, publishing in 1860 Egypt in its Biblical Relations and Moral Aspects. In 1861 he married Margaret, daughter of Lewis Jones of Shrewsbury; they had five children. He became in 1863 pastor of Maengwyn church in his native town, and died there 14 April 1880. Foulkes Jones was highly esteemed as a preacher; [the volume of his sermons (below) was long one of the most widely read Welsh books].
