Born at Gelli-groes, in the parish of Mynydd-islwyn, Monmouthshire, 24 December 1840, he was christened 16 July 1858 by the minister of the Congregational chapel at Mynydd-islwyn. He was ordained deacon 25 February 1872, with a title to the curacy of Llanedy, Carmarthenshire, and priest 24 February 1877, with a title to Llanfihangel Cwm-du, Brecknock. On 17 April 1879 he was licensed to the curacy of Vaynor, Brecknock, and on 16 May 1883 became incumbent of that parish, where he remained until his death, 4 June 1903.

He was a keen eisteddfodwr, and, under the bardic name of Creidiol, composed a considerable amount of poetry. His Dyddanion Min yr Hwyr, sef Rhiangerdd Emma Prys, was published in 1862, Egin Awen, yn cynnwys awdlau, cywyddau … , in 1867, and Rhiangerdd - Gwenfron o'r Dyffryn in 1868. In 1869 he edited an anthology of verse, Gardd y Beirdd; gan Ugain o Feirdd Cymru, and in 1897 his Vaynor, its History and Guide was published.
