Born 23 April 1841 at Cefn Isa, Rhos-lan, Llanystumdwy, the ninth child of Owen and Ann Hughes. His father died before he was born and the family moved to Portmadoc, where he was given an elementary education at Pont-ynys-galch British school. He followed his craft as a sail-maker until he was 25 years of age, when he began to preach. He received additional training at Clynnog school (1866-7) and Bala College (1867-71) and was ordained in 1873. In 1872 he became minister of Brynengan, Brynkir, and Garndolbenmaen churches. Seven years later he gave up the last named of these but he looked after the other two for forty-five years.

Early in his career he began to take an interest in the history of his denomination and was entrusted with the task of writing the history of Methodism in Llŷn and Eifionydd. This history was never written, although he spent the rest of his life gathering material for it; some of his gleanings, however, are to be found in articles written for Y Traethodydd, Y Drysorfa, Cymru (O.M.E.), Y Geninen, and Cylchgrawn Cymdeithas Hanes y Methodistiaid Calfinaidd. He also published the following books: (1) Hanes Cyfarfod Ysgolion ac Ysgolion Sabbothol y Methodistiaid Calfinaidd yn Nosbarth Eifionydd (Caernarvon, 1886); (2) Amddiffyniad i'r Methodistiaid Cymreig - a translation of T. Charles 's Vindication (Caernarvon, 1894); (3) Robert Dafydd, Brynengan (Caernarvon, 1895); (4) Trefecca, Llangeitho, a'r Bala (Caernarvon, 1896); (5) Owen Owens, Cors-y-Wlad (Dolgelley, 1898); (6) Hanes Diwygiadau Crefyddol Cymru (Caernarvon, 1906); (7) Adgofion amy diweddar Barch. John Williams, Llecheiddior, by Richard Eames and Henry Hughes (Bangor, 1885). He was also a considerable authority on the old families of Caernarvonshire.

He died 13 August 1924.
