Born 28 January 1855 at Manchester, son of William Jennings Hoyle. He was educated at Owens College and at [ Exeter College and afterwards at] Christ Church, Oxford (B.A. 1877, M.A. 1882, D.Sc.); he was also M.R.C.S. From 1889 to 1909 he was director of the Manchester Museum, and from 1909 till his retirement in 1924, director of the National Museum of Wales, where there is a portrait in oils. He died at Porthcawl, 7 February 1926.
